...And the winners are: Pocket Pond, Soundrop and Use Your Handwriting. All are available free from iTunes. I have picked them more for their design brilliance than their usefulness. I should add that they all reside on my iPhone, but I can see that they would be equally compelling, if not more so, on an iPad with the much larger screen. Pocket Pond by John Moffett is a pond with rippling water and colorful fish. You can touch the water and scare the fish. You can add lotus blossoms and buzzing dragonflies. Beautiful to look it, entirely realistic, with just the right relaxing sounds and motion.
Next, we have Soundrop Free by Develoe LLC. Balls drop out of a hole and fall straight down, till you introduce lines with your finger that they bounce against. And when they do so, there is the sound of the ball hitting, and then hitting other lines that may be in the bounce path, and so on. The frequency of the sound varies with how far the balls go before they collide. The interesting thing is that the result is not cacophony but rather a complex set of sounds that are logically created. Try it -- my write-up does not do justice to the drama. Finally, there is Use Your Handwriting by Gee Whiz Stuff. Turning the iPhone sideways to maximize writing space, you use your finger to easily write out a sentence. This can become part of a to-do list, or other notes you are taking. Different colors are easily selected. You can do your signature with surprising accuracy. I have found it useful for jotting down something quickly: a phone number, or a short grocery list.
